Long Term Disability Attorney Richard H. Rizk
Richard H. Rizk has resolved disability claims both as a defense attorney and as an attorney advocating for disabled persons. Mr. Rizk began his disability law career in 1988 writing disability appeals for State Accident Insurance Fund (SAIF) of Oregon. From 1989 through 1990, he associated with the Portland law firm of Vick & Gutzler, where he continued to author pleadings and motions in disability and personal injury contexts—this time on behalf of those with claims. At that time he also represented disabled persons through his work at Disability Rights Oregon (then known as Oregon Advocacy Center). There, he advocated for committed mentally ill patients of Dammasch State Hospital. In the early 1990s, he worked under well-respected Portland disability and civil rights attorney, Stephen L. Brischetto.
Mr. Rizk understands the insurance industry. In 1990, he served as in-house legal counsel to Wausau (Nationwide) Insurance Company, representing policyholders in injury and disability litigation. From 1996 to 2000 in Chicago, Illinois, Mr. Rizk developed litigation strategies for the Nationwide Insurance Group, resolving and directing high exposure, complex environmental insurance litigation on a national level.
He is the son of a medical doctor and mental-health nursing administrator, an uncle to a Down syndrome child, and has overcome a childhood disability himself. He is a former Special Olympics coach, YMCA counselor, and was named Safety Person recipient 2010 Far West Ski Association. Mr. Rizk is passionate in his representation of disabled persons and is well aware of unethical tactics sometimes used by long term disability insurance companies.
